Break Light out / Check engine light on until tap breaks

Hi all,

Just picked up a 1990 325 IS 5 speed with 133k on it. Dream car.

Anyways I have noticed when the car is first started if my foot is not on the break, the check engine light will come on and the over head indicator will say the break lights are out. As soon as I tap the break pedal the both the check engine light and the over head light goes out. The brake lights appear to be working fine.

Any ideas?

Nothing's wrong, it's normal. Download the owners manual and you can read up on this feature.

That is the check controll light not the check engine light

I don't know what a break light is but I think your check control for the brake light is functioning correctly.

Mine does this too, but not all the time. Sometimes it just turns on randomly when I drive. The light you're seeing is not the check engine light though. The check engine light is on the bottom "bar" of lights on your cluster.
