My dad may be a bit daft, but he says I should run higher octane because of the elevation I'm at, and to see if that effects the small engine tick I have going on in the M20. Might need a valve adjustment, but I live in Colorado.

Make sure that the tick you hear is not coming from the injectors. Higher octane will not hurt your engine at all...you just might not need it.

That just means that you'd be getting less air in the motor. It still shouldn't pre-ignite due to the pressure in the cylinder.

It's best to run quality petrol IE Shell, Chevron, 76. I baby the M20B25 with 91. I like to think it helps for the higher rpm sprints. The Tacoma on the other hand receives 87.

Octane is the ability of a fuel to resist knock, and high-compression engines tend to knock more. The obverse of that is that lower-compression engines can run on lower-octane gas. Air is thinner the higher above sea level you go. Less air going into the cylinders means less pressure at top dead center when things go bang. It's a lot like lowering the compression ratio in the engine, reducing the need for high octane. Cars will run just fine on lower-octane fuel when they're well above sea level--and all of those states are. Hopefully, by the time you get back down to denser air, you've burned off most of the low-octane stuff, and can refill the tank with higher-grade fuel."

What does filling up every two weeks have to do with irrationally wasting money on premium petrol?

You know over the course of 5 years that's over $700 difference at $.30 difference per gallon, 25 mpg, and 12k a year miles. That's not chump change.

Bro, it's not the more expensive gas saving you filling up. It's your driving habits. How long is your commute? What kind of MPG are you getting?

I've tried the premium vs regular thing in a few different cars - negligible difference in economy - certainly not enough to justify paying the difference.

In my Eta, my lifetime average over 2 years has been 7.6L/100 KM (or 31 US/37 UK MPG). At legal speeds, I can easily travel 700 km before I need to think about gas. This is on regular 87. I do run a can of Seafoam between oil changes in the gas. And twice I year I run half a can in the crankcase and intake.

Difference in price from 89-91 is $.16 per gallon. My gas tank has a 16.60 gallon capacity. It's a marginal increase of $2.65 per full tank of gas.

The tune I run has a higher ignition timing. Justification.

I don't believe you for a few reasons.

1.) If you were playing devils advocate you wouldn't actually put premium fuel in the car.

2.) You used the irrational argument that 'you only fill up every two weeks' If you were actually running a tune then that would have been in your original post for your reasoning for running 91, but it wasn't. Your reasoning was that you think 91 is somehow better at higher RPMs.

3.) The difference between in price 89 and 91 is irrelevant as long as 91 costs more, since 91 would also be a waste of money in a car tuned for 89. So if you do in fact have a tune for 89, you're still wasting money, and not playing devils advocate.
