Aftermarket oil cooler on boosted m20

    Hey guys,

I'm almost ready to start swapping in my boosted m20 engine on my 1990 325is. I've come to a stopping point with the issue of running an oil cooler. 4 owners back, this car was boosted but the stock oil cooler was ditched and a remote oil filter setup was installed using a bracket that supports two oil filters. I believe this was done to clear the turbo manifold and help decrease oil temps since this was all done about 10 years ago.

My question lies in what aftermarket oil cooler to go with that will allow me to keep my relocated oil filter (currently mounted to the side of my right frame rail). I see kits all over ebay - are they any good? I've been researching Canton in-line oil thermostats that will bypass the oil cooler until oil temp reaches the desired 215+ degrees farenheit. The Canton thermostat uses 12AN fittings whereas all the oil cooler kits on ebay are 10AN.

Would I be better off finding a decent oil cooler and just ordering "x" feet of braided lines and a bunch of fittings to make my own that would be compatible with the Canton thermostat?

Any pictures of current setups anyone is running for an aftermarket oil cooler would be VERY much appreciated, especially if it's on a boosted car.

    Thanks in advance!

Use a factory Is model oil thermostat housing. Its a thermostat housing, and you can rebuild it. Its very easy and pelican parts has everything.

You can also cut off the knotch on the housing to rotate it 180 degrees (where the oil filter is close to the CPS) This gets it out of the way of any turbo manifold and makes it easier to change! I can change mine with the car still on the ground and dont have to jack it up.

You'll need some M22 to 10AN fittings. This is a common fitting, and it keeps everything the factory size... no 12AN no 8AN bullshit. Get the cooler you want to run and run it.

    when I rebuilt mine..

You can see how the housing is facing the opposite way here

and you can see right here how it clears everything from the twinscroll manifold and the filter facing frontwards... which is very convenient as i said.

      Cool setup. ^
I have a setup like that^ but mine is connected to a volvo turbo 740 oil cooler. I don't have pics because it's not on my car yet. I also took out the oil thermostat because I couldn't get it back in lol. I might put it back in though

That setup looks very clean and contained @e30ordie and probably a hell of a lot cheaper! Thanks! Do you have any pictures of the way you mounted the oil cooler?

Looking at fittings on ebay, do these look right?

Also, do you have any pictures of how you mounted your oil cooler and the fittings you used for that? Where did you get your lines? Any specs on them as far as diameter and fittings that are on them?

If you want a remote mount filter you can run a thermostatic sandwich filter between the remote mount and oil filter .... (or there is a Greddy plate the is remote mount with an integrated thermostat). Do NOT run with a turbo street car without a thermostat.

PM me I've got a full word document I put together.

I'd love to see this word document if you can send it to me. I lucked out and found a used "is" filter mount like e30ordie used for $30 on ebay ($300 on pelican) so I snatched that and all the o rings and plug to rebuild it so I'm going to run that. I'm also using a sandwich plate from kamotors for my oil supply to the turbo. Found a few oil coolers on ebay that might work, now I just need fittings and lines

Is a sandwich plate the only way to feed the turbo if you kept the stock filter mount and rotated it? I kind of like that idea.

Nope, the stock lines can be used, or adapted. The remote mount just gets everything
out of the way so it doesn't get cooked by the manifold.

You can feed the turbo or mount a pressure/temp switch via oil pressure switch adapter (here, also on ebay for <$10)

People have also drilled and tapped the large hollow bolt that mounts the oil filter housing.

                    Edit:
The car still isn't running, but I have the oil pressure switch distribution block and a sandwich plate installed on my iX. I would just use the sandwich plate for turbo feed/oil pressure sender/Oil temp senders if I did it again.

Make sure you either get a sandwich plate that isn't anodized, or you separately ground any sensors you mount to it.
