E30 Rear Speed Sensor, do I need it?

Hello. So I have an '88 325. Yesterday, my LSD came in that I had ordered. I ordered just the diff, so I needed to take the old case apart and get the open diff out. When I got the open diff out, I realized there was a speed sensor ring thing. My LSD did not come with one. Can I take that ring off and put it on my LSD? Or do I even need that sensor? If I can re use that ring, I'd like to if it's easy. Thanks!

it's extremely simple. there's only 2 wires - one of them is probably broken. the speedo itself is self contained, unless it's not getting power or something completely fried it, it will work.

...and yes, you can re- use your ring... epoxy it or tack- weld it on as
it's pressed on the first time, and re- use will make it a little less likely
          to stay on...
