the reserve light on the E30 definitely doesn't turn on with the ignition. The light can't turn on unless the switch in the fuel sender is on, which can only happen if the fuel level is low. There's no other connection for that light. the only reason it would turn on with the ignition is if your fuel level was already low.

Exactly this, there is no facility to turn it on, it's just a switch to a light bulb, nothing to do with any other circuit...so it cannot do the bulb check thing no matter what.

How many r3v'ers does it take to check a light?

Depends how many conflicting answers you want.

Mine has never come on with the key switched on, only does when low on fuel...

Besides if you are in there and worried about it spend the .50 or whatever the cost on a new bulb.
