Ac compressor issue

My Ac compressor stopped working today and i have tracked it down to a damaged wire off the right side of the Compressor I believe is it the temp sensor see item 5 in the diagram.

If i press on the wires the Compressor kicks on.

My question is can i remove this sensor without draining the refrigerant or do i have to drain it in order to replace it?

The sensor on the side of the compressor can be removed. It is only mounted to the housing. The sensor on the pre-1989 receiver-dryer are the ones that will open the system.
