any way to buy/order/make a brand new key?

All the locks/tumblers are 26 years old and worn out. My last working door lock broke so I "rebuilt" it with the OEM kit. Now, the key copies I made from the SINGLE original key will not unlock/turn the tumbler for the door, but they will start the car.

Is there any possible way to get a brand new key for the car?

I am scared to have only one key which will successfully lock and unlock the car (that key is also nearly half broken itself - scary times)

Take your registration and license to your friendly BMW dealer and you can get a brand new steel OEM BMW master key.

I've done it on all my project cars for the reasons you mention - the old keys were worn out, or they were cheap brass copies, or the locks were acting up. Plus a new master key has that cool light built into it.

The P/N for the master key with the light is 51-21-1-900-876. It's not cheap, but really the only way to achieve what you're after.

Thanks!!!! that is wonderful news. Thought I might have been SOL what with the older bimmer stuff becoming increasingly NLA and dealer/BMW support dwindling

          Thanks, good to know.

Do they let you bring some blank keys and they will cut them (oem blanks) or do you have to buy the cut key straight from them?

I would like to get 2 keys, one with the light and one without (or if it's too expensive just 2 regular keys)

Also, what did you guys pay for the key with and without the light?

You can try that, but most dealers from my experience will not cut keys they did not sell.

You definitely want the steel key the dealer sells if you're doing a VIN cut.

I want to say I paid about $30 for one with a light and something less than that for one without, though I'd have to find the receipts to be sure.

Ahhh okay. Here I was scared the dealer would gouge me for like $100 per key. Awesome. I'll probably get 2 with a light.

Thanks guys!! It's on the "to do" list

My baller lighted key just purchased last month shows on my invoice at $56.77 list price, but I paid $27.80. Sales tax on top of that.

Whelp. I ordered a "vin matched" lighted key at the dealer after work today. Paid $87 for it. Dunno if it's just the dealer, or that's what it costs at a dealer to have a genuine key cut but that was that. Didn't bother to get a second. I'll use the old one as the spare.

Yeah, I was going to say...get ready to get gouged. I paid $30-40 which is like cost + 10-15% or whatever it was. List price is going to be about what you paid. What you could have done was buy an original lighted blank from ECS for like $25 and have it cut by a real locksmith (not a hardware store) based on your worn key. It won't be perfect but then again, neither are your locks if you have been using them all this time.

That's what I did previously which worked. However, I just replaced/rebuilt all the locks, and now the "copies" don't work to lock or unlock the car. Hence the need to get an original new key. I'll have that one copied.
