HELP! Why are my brake lights coming on when I depress the clutch pedal?

Background: Car was an auto that was converted to manual. (1991 325iC) The switch that is activated with the clutch pedal (which I believe is used to deactivate the cruise control in the event the clutch pedal is depressed) is not installed and instead shorted to allow for cruise control to work. My question is, why the hell are my brake lights coming on while I depress the clutch pedal?

What I have done: Took the cover off to see what the hell is going on. There are no switched engaged or disengaged when the pedal is pressed unlike the brake pedal. So how the hell does the car sense the clutch pedal is being depressed? Internal switch that I can't spot?

What I'd like to do: Press the clutch pedal without my brake lights coming on.

Any info on the topic is much appreciated.

There's nothing too secret about this system, so I hate to ask, but have to:

are you sure they put the clutch pedal on the right side?

Ok, got that out of the way...

So next thing I'd do is unhook the brake light switch, and make sure the lights
no longer come on. Then look at the brake pedal itself and make sure the return
spring's attached correctly. 'Cause I suspect that what's happening is that a push on
the clutch pedal's causing something else to move around down there (like the brake pedal, the bracket, the whole pedal hanger, I dunno) just enough to let the brake light
    switch close...

This can't be because the brake lights come on when I press the brake pedal. They just also come on when I press the clutch pedal

In that case, I'd look for spliced wiring in your brake sensor harness.

Did you try unhooking the brake light switch to see if they still come on?

brake switch is out of adjustment and the torque from pushing the clutch pedal is flexing pedalbox allowing brake switch to operate?
