naw.... its air injection/pulse air. injects/draws air into exhaust system to boost exhaust temps to burn off pollutants.

I don't believe for a minuite that BMW made a car with a smog pump and AIR injection. AIR works by basically diluting the exhaust stream, and must use a pump. Nasty crap, cheap-o Amurrican tech. Does help reduce pollutants, though.

I would like to see a pic of more of that system.

In the meantime, GOE30, why dont you simply insert a small pipe out the neck of your new cone filter? It isn't rocket science, that system needs clean, filtered air. Choose a filter with a neck, punch a hole in it and glue a tube in.

That would be the whole "design" part you referred to.

Keep in mind that you will likely LOSE power when you do your bitchin' mod, but the ricer boys will be impressed by the sound of a vacuum cleaner under your hood.

Your intake temps will go up, so O2 density will also decrease, so you will waste more fuel, too. But you will have that bitchin' sound. Plus, how could you lose with that look!

Ok, enough poking fun at the newb.

                  Rock on, bubba!

its not a smog pump system, its pulse air, draws in air through negative pressure in the exhaust.

So the suction of the backwave of a pulse is what causes the suction?

If that is the case, and it is not restricted,(in the airbox) just plug a crankcase breather cone on it, call it a day.

Why do those e30tech douches make it so hard to get a damn answer out of anything they feel is unfit?

for 1, .... STOP, DO SOME RESEARCH, the cone filter you are probably thinking of installing will not flow more than your stock paper filter[PERIOD]

yeah #2, ..... my 84 323i didn't have anything of the sort. ...and if you want to "aid" your intake's breathability, just cut the lower box's snorkel out and fit a larger diameter snorkel (~3") to the plastic backing plate (also cut to match new snorkel) ... ...then get your dremel out, cut out all the filler between your driverside headlight grill slats...just the solid filler between the slats, nothing else. (it is there for BMW's mold's ease of production) .... then go to a junk yard and find an e28 535is, and snatch it's AFM!!!!! ...any other m30 AFM will work, but you will have to change out the electrical board. ----- WAIT, thinking about it, your 85 323i has L-Jet on it, it doesn't matter, your AFM electrical is unique, so your gonna have to swap the electricals no matter what kind of m30 afm you get

doing what i just suggested will yeild you THE MOST PERFORMANCE GAIN you are going to get from JUST modifying the basic intake peripherals.

Note: doing these will change the sound of your intake, it will be slightly louder and significantly deeper sounding.

PS: the cost of a new paper air filter every so often will be about as much as your going to have to pay for the cleaning solution and new filter oil to properly maintain the cone filter. ...and to top it off, the oiled cone filter is going to be adding in the amount of oil residue build-up in your intake boot over time, oil corrodes and destroys rubber,... wanna have to routinely replace those too? there's a reason NO car manufacturer uses oiled air filters from the factory.
