1986 eta has around town drivability but at 4k rpms chokes out badly

I cleaned the air box the tps pulled the throttle body off cleaned tightened and my rough start problems are gone but WOT makes the car choke out complete loss of power at 4k rpms it just dies with wide open throttle car just dies let off the pedal or just throttle carefully and around town drivability is just fine starting idle normal driving all seem fine but no performance this started after a radiator replacement the thermostat and housing replaced. It was very infrequent after the cooling issues were solved but it was still happening. It seems to happen more frequently when warm right after a fuel filter replacement it seem to cure the problem for about a day but it could be just the warm cold temp thing. So not sure any suggestions would be great thanks in advance

No idea why you replace your fuel filter so often but that together with what sounds like fuel starvation at revs, suggests you have a shit load of shit in your tank.

I have replaced the filter twice in three years both times it looked like thick dirty rust water coming out but it smells like fuel lol so yes there is stuff in the tank because I got the car from the original owner a family member who let the car sit for 3 years but I sea foamed changed the fuel pumps used some injector cleaner and plugs in the beginning but it's been totally fine . Yes definitely fuel starvation but I can't drop the tank to bead blast seal etc maybe I can just clean the in tank pump again. Your right of course come to think of it the external pump has been very loud again lately like last time the external pump went out that was about two years ago. I guess the tank contaminants are ruining the pump and now starvation thanks for the reply I am going to go clean the internal tank pump

You need to clean the tank then the pump. Without dropping the tank, remove the pump assembly, use a wooden stick to stir and mix the sludge well, siphon the dirty gas out of the tank while stirring using a long piece of Tygon tubing. Pour in another 3 gallons of fresh gas and repeat the process again. You might have to do the procedure again after a few weeks of driving. Take the contaminated gas to the local waste location.

Need more run on sentences you see run on sentences help diagnose problems with the bmw because the more words you can fit into a sentence the better chances of solving the problem become assuming of course the problem is with the bmw itself and not the owner who writes run on sentences thinking punctuation doesnt matter of course which really it doesnt otherwise youd see people saying cocks suck rather than cocks suck which is pretty gay or rather pretty gay who knows either way your gas tank should be clean as should any gas system in a car which has sat for years on end.

Alright true, sorry for the lack of patience for proper grammar. I just popped out the in tank pump to inspect and clean and it really wasn't bad at all. I fumbled with the air compressor gun and may have over spun the pump eff my life. I put it all back and now it pretty much just dies upon any kind of load omg sucks!!! I have a used in tank pump somewhere that was operating fine but was changed out for elimination process, different car 87 is model. At any rate I did go find the old fuel filter I changed out a few days ago, its been drying out in the garage lol. I tapped on it chunks of rust colored sand came out!!! WOW holy smokes so I probably smoked the other in tank pump that sucks! I will swap tomorrow to see what happens uuggh!!!! So on a good note I pulled the inbound line on the bottom of the fuel filter to see if anymore rust colored mud would come out? But nope it was fine clean and normal. I wonder if maybe I didn't get a good seal putting the in tank pump back?

It's pretty obvious that your problem comes from the tank so anything else you do is really a waste of time and. Only trying to stay ahead of a problem that is only going to get worse if you do t fix it so you should stop replacing pumps and filters and go to the heart of the problem and clean the tank which, by the way, will look clean cause all the rust particles settle until you start driving and whoever said run on sentences helped fix problems was right cause I'm sure my explanation is the solution :)

Nah...let the OP waste money on replacing the pump and filter. He'll come to cleaning or replacing the fuel tank eventually.

well today I pulled the in line high pressure pump to see if sediment was in the line and it looked fine it does have some buzzing sounds and it gets warm but its a bosch product only maybe 3 years old and looks fine idnk? I did notice the 7/16 fuel line from the in tank pump to the high pressure pump had a pretty bad kink from the angle that it bends to meet the high pressure pump. Thought maybe it was choking out the inbound fuel to the in line pump. SoIi bought ten feet of 7/16 fuel line and using the old line as a pull and guide I was able to feed it thru. I now have a nice new hose with a very soft bend and very little angle where it meets the in line pump but nothing has improved. I can start her up and drive slowly around the block but giving it some pedal just chokes it out its actually worse now. I could get to higher rpms before and still have drive ability now it is only able to start idle a creep along slowly. I did change the in tank pump with a used spare maybe I could now change the high pressure pump with my used spare hoping this gets some progress. I do have another TPS but its from an 87 IS model not sure if its compatible I need to look that up and probably should check the plugs yikes seems to me the high pressure pump is just failing getting worse in stages, well at least I had a couple of days off to try and contend with this mess. Thanks for any feedback in advance

I can not find any info on the difference between the IS and the ES throttle posistion switch? Is there any major difference ? Has anybody tried to switch them around before? I dont want to damage anything but its just a switch right? feedback to the ECU and thats all? Is there different voltage? Is this too risky? I really need this car man omg thanks for any feedback in advance .>>S

oh and just a side not that small black oval the bosch sensor altimeter barametric thingy thats on the side of the air box was loose I lighlty glued it back together but I dont think that would cause such drastic symptoms as what I have but thought I should mention it was there thanks

so I decided one more attempt check the plugs all are perfect. Did not pull the TPS again for a swap. I did pull the high pressure in line pump to swap with an older used one I had. even thought I pulled it before from the in side coming from the tank I had never pulled it form the high pressure side going up to the hard lines. Wow so I got the power cables off etc and left it on a mat for further inspection nothing seemed wrong. I went about my way getting set for the install of the pump clamps, tools, rags etc. I decide to compare the two pumps side by side with a flashlight and I guess after sitting and drying out for a while it was no apparent . A ton of red mud looking rusty muck like clay was coming out of the large nozzle side. I got out the compressor and towels to clean it up must have been a bit more than two teaspoons of stuff in that newer pump. Damn it was ultra fine sediment once the gas evaporated it was like a fine powder that pretty much disentegraded into a pink red rusty smears on the towels man I can believe it all fit in there? Major blockage anyways I put the older pump on and it drove well for 15 minutes , actually chirped 1st to 2 nd pretty good for an eta car well it does have a 4.10 lsd from a convertible. At any rate drove well so far way stronger than it has been in a while. So now back to the 87 that I think does have an actual TPS issue luckily I have a spare TPS but no more days off and the garage is looking unruly too bad my daughter is having friends over this is gonna be some complaints Thanks :) S...

Sudden and brief power loss at certain RPMs or full throttle are a sign of a failed AFM. Maybe that is your problem.

Car will feel like it has full power at full throttle, then feels like a misfire, then power comes back.

That was a symptom I took the afm and everything related from that front area and pulled it apart and cleaned including tps and vacuum line checks etc . The little black oval on the side of the afm , the Bosch altitude adjuster was slightly molested but I got that handled. Things are back to normal now the fuel pump in line was full of red clay rust gunk had to go back to my older used Bosch unit. The ETA is pretty much under control its back to the IS model for some hesitation hiccup etc thanks again Scott
