Help with steering question on 91ix

    Problem:
When I drive through a puddle (eespically deep ones) my steering becomes almost nonexistent. Very very tough to turn the wheel. No issues when not wet. Confirmed today after hitting some puddles. Odly it's worse turning right. After a few seconds the problem fix itself. Although my steering is tough. But not impossible like immediatly after getting wet.

I have had a leak in my power steering resevior for a long time but have not notices a leak any other place that could relate to this issue. It is full and I check it regularly and refill as needed.

    Recent work:
I have completely rebuilt the suspension nearly all parts are new. I just had refurbished half axles put in. Other wise new parts.

Any help or suggestions tracking the problem would be great. Thanks!!!

    That's a weird one :???:

I can't think of anything that would manifest stiff steering when wet. Though you say it's 'tough' when dry...

    ...how's your steering UJ ?

    You in Agawam, MA ?

      Steering UJ?

Yes the steering is a little tough compared to newer vehicles. But the problem I have been experiencing is chuck Norris like strength reguired to turn the wheels immediatly after they get wet. It's very wierd. Goes away quickly.

      Yes Agawam MA

UJ is probably the ujoints on the steering shaft. I would be more inclined to think you need a new belt. What is probably happening is the belt that drives the Power Steering Pump is spinning on the pulley when it gets wet.

Get the car off the ground. Turn it on. Move the wheel back and forth, then have a friend pour water on the belt. See if that changes it.

Note: Since your tires aren't on the ground, the resistance will be different. You're just looking for a change, not the same feeling.

I second the belt is slipping. the ix steering is extremely heavy if PS isn't working. It can feel like you have no steering at all.
