Odometer still not working after new gears

Ok I'm stumped. I replaced my motometer cluster with one that was in fully working condition as stated by the previous owner. When I put it in I noticed the odometer and trip were not counting but the speedo does work. I figured the gears could have been damaged in shipping so I ordered new moto gears and put them in. I can manually turn the gears by hand and the odometer/trip will count, but when the cluster is in the car they don't count. I tried searching and didn't find much on this issue. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Take a look at the very last picture here. I wasted 6 hours of my life due to a error on Garagistic's end. All I got was a "Sorry we'll send you out a new set". I thought at the very least they'd want the faulty gears back to look at them to check out there manufacturing error but nope. Double check this isn't the case for you, because obviously it's been a problem in the past if they didn't need to see the faulty gears they sold me.

Now if this isn't your problem, I'd say you broke the motor pulling on the shaft to hard removing the small gear/ brass bushing.

Checked the gears and they were all lined up evenly. I am starting to think it is a wiring issue because the cluster worked in the previous car.

If you have access to another car, I'd swap it into the other e30 and report back. If it's still not working, you must have broke the motor connected to the shaft removing the brass bushing, to put on the new small gear. Besides that I suppose check the plug on your differential I know if that's unplugged your ODO won't count.

If there was a problem at the diff connector the speedo wouldn't work

If the plug was bad the speedo wouldn't have any reading either so I know the plug is ok. There must be some way to test the motor when it is out of the car.

Correct, if both the speedo and odometer fail, The cause can either be the fusing or the signal from the sender.

Your odometer is electrically driven so the motor must be in working condition. The motor winding are extremely fragile. So those guys who smack on the dash to get their cluster working, that type of behavior is what can damage the motor windings and also the circuit board.

If you get fed up enough, send your speedometer over to us. We can repair it, test it and warranty it for 3 years. In addition to new gears, we also recondition the circuit board, this is especially a problem with VDO brand, no so much MM brand. In your case, if your gears are installed correctly, the motor may be at fault.

You should also make sure the protective cover (over the gears) is not tightened too tight as that will prevent the gears from spinning.
