Makes clunking noise when turning left only

    Hey all,

I am turning to you all for some advise on where to best spend my time next. My issue on my e30 is when I turn my wheel to the left side while moving or rolling it has a deap clunk sound.

The sound is every half second or so as if it's with some rotation and not suspension. It does not make the noise when turning right only left. I feel the knocking down by the pedals too.

Car is S50 swapped with a z3 rack, I.E. Steering guibo, new control arms, UUC full sway bar kit with new end links and Treehouse LCAB. During inspection, appeared to have good wheel bearings and upper strut housing. However this is not confirmed. I'll look into more closely tonight.

I'm thinking the only think I haven't addressed yet is the inner and outer tie rod ends. Would this be the issue? Why would this only make noise while turning one direction vs the other? Could it be the rack?

Thanks for your help, and I'll be updating when I solve the issue incase others have similar problems.

How did you check your wheel bearings?

I just went through this. Check your wheel bearings by taking the tire and brake caliper off, then spinning the rotor with your hand on the spring. If you can feel any vibration in the spring, your bearing on that side is bad. Check your right side first

Could also be a tie rod if the outer rod isn't level with the ground.. but doubtful

it's a Kenny Powers quote on wheels

I just did a simple shake when car was off the gound holding the tire st 12 and 6. Not super perfect but didn't have any play. I'll try it again! I may have missed something. I have no idea on the condition of the wheel bearing as I have not replaced them yet and PO had no insight into them. Do those make that kinda noise when turning?

Okay thanks, I'll try this. Was this your issue as well? I'm thinking because I increase the tire to 235 and the suspension is super tight now, it aplified the week leaks.

Noise that only happens when turning in one direction is usually the wheel bearings. Delfin has the correct procedure to check them.

              Update and all fixed:

Found two major issues that solved my problem. The passenger end link was loose and the nut wasn't tight to the inner sleeve. The other problem was a weight on the outside of the rim that would contact my strut housing.

Surprisingly the weight only hit when turning and not going straight. One of my back wheels didn't have a rim weight so I just swapped them out with each other. And now no noise!!! While I was down there, I did the test mentioned above for the wheel bearing and glad to report those appear to be in good order.

Not sure if this will help anyone else, but worth a read if someone is running Fifteen 52's or other wide wheels.

Good find! I'm not sure I would have ever found that weight as the issue. That must have been driving you nuts.

Yes very much so, however it was progressively getting worse and louder after my BBK. My best guess is the Rotors from the Corrado were a bit different offset and thickness than my e30 ones. Which ended up bringing in the wheel a mm or so. Enough to drive me crazy and think my wheel was gunna fall off! Lol
