Nope, solenoid's dead. Ground lead is perfectly fine, as you said from the oil pan to the frame, huge wire, solid as a rock. I tried to jump the solenoid and it wouldn't go, so I did kill it. Damn.

While I was down there the security guard came down to tell me that I have to talk to the super about my spot, and it turns out that people complained about me working on the car. So now I have to figure out how to get the starter out and in as efficiently as possible because I'll likely have to do it during the day outside... I had a look and I really don't see how I'm going to do this. There are so many hoses in the way and the brake booster. I can see the bottom bolt, I could probably do it from under the car. But the top, I can't even see it.

Sorry that didn't help. I couldn't do anything else without being there. You could always get someone to help you push it off? Bentley says to use a half moon or starter box wrench to remove that top bolt.
If you're looking for a starter, I've got one you can have really cheap, but it's for an 89 325i, so I don't know if it'll work on your car.

That's interesting, I just googled what a half moon wrench is... that could work!

I really appreciate the help though! Do your starter connections look like mine? I think I have the older type...

Is there any way I can remove the solenoid without pulling the starter?? Looks like there's a bit of space down there.

Mine looks a little different, ha no flat connectors, and it has another stud. As for the solenoid, I don't know if you can take it apart in the car, I have never tried, but I couldn't find a solenoid anywhere. I ended up getting a used starter.............

Poop, well thanks a lot for the offer! I really wish I could have used it. Hope I can find one within reasonable distance, shipping on it will probably be more than it costs... aiya...

                Update:

Well, I pulled the starter and a Axxe had a used one for me but it was a newer design. He was going to make me an adapter from the pin to the spade. I took a pic for him and he's like uh... which connector??? I'm like the only one, the one I took a pic of. He says oh ok, it just seems there's another one. Here is what I saw with the starter installed, I think it's obvious to anyone normal that this is the pin for the spade connector:

But then I zoomed in on the pics and I'm thinking... really what the hell is that??????

What an evil fucking place to put the connector, there is no way to see it from the top and there's no reason to search for another one with the one on top in plain view. I couldn't sleep... I went to the garage and plugged the starter back in and put the spade connector on the lower pin and...

                THE FUCKER CRANKED!!!

So today I put the starter back on, and went for my first drive in the car! :D:D:D:D:D The E30 is so light and sensitive, I love it! Can't wait to tighten it up and do the first track day! The eta motor pulls GREAT, I'm gonna slow my apetite for the swap for now.

Seriously though guys, I posted a picture of how I wired it from the start, was it so hard to go look at your car and tell me I fucked it up? Oh well... at least it's done now.
