New to me 1991 325ic manual. So I replaced the reverse lights switch due to both not working at all, fuses are all good bulbs are good. Still no lights.
Where to start tracking it down?

Check the switch and wiring. The wiring runs up the shifter and connects by the boot inside the car. The switch is on the drivers side of the trans.
I already replaced the switch with a new one. So where exactly inside the boot does the wiring connect to?

should be a connector inside the center console underneath the shifter boot.
The wires from the reverse switch run up through the rubber grommet to this connector.
Easiest thing to do is pull the shift boot, and you will see a pair of wires that run through the rubber shifter bushing, under the car. There will be a connector right there under the shift boot.
Disconnect the wiring at the plug and jumper the wires that come from the console area. If the lights come on (when the car is on) then the issue is with the wiring under the car or the switch or tranny itself. If it doesn't come on its the wiring, fuse, etc in the car.

Thanks guys, I've narrowed it down to the wiring from the connector inside the boot down to the switch. Lights came ON when I jumped the wires and the switch is new.
Anyone have the part number for that harness?

Search my name for my issue with a new bmw switch being shorter then the original.
Yes, at the boot. I will re-test at the switch.

I redid the harness using a bit of weather proof shielded security wire and used a spare connector for the end. My old switch still works, it was just the wire.

Just diagnosed this on my car as a problem with the switch or switch wiring (probably wiring like everyone else) by bypassing the switch as Todd recommended. Will solder this weekend. Seems like a common failure point.

Well, finally got my ass to do this project. Installed a new wiring harness and problem solved. Threading the harness through the rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter was a bitch, other than than very straight forward.
Thanks all for their input!
