I have a very similar issue and the plug is missing for me, do you think it is just water getting thrown up into the foam from driving in wet weather or is it something more serious?

So is that an indication that it's leaking from the heater core..

If not a heater core leak there could be a hole in the floorpan letting water in. Mine was rusted through near the gas pedal and soaking the carpet when driving in the rain. Water would then leak out around the floor plug.

Either way pull the carpet to see if there is a heater core leak or a hole in the floor pan.

Your heater core is most likely leaking. Check the carpet near the pedals to confirm.

If not heater core, then heater valve.

Yep, it's the heater core. I checked and the whole drivers side is soaked with coolant.
I'm going to just block it off for now since it's summer in Florida and I just don't want to lose any more coolant. I won't need heat for 6 months or so.

I would suggest taking the carpet out and getting it dry. Also a good time to check for possible rust.
