Replacing Voltage Regulator *Now with pictures*

I am in the process of replacing the voltage regulator on my 1990 325is because I am having problems with the alternator overcharging. I ordered new brushes for the regulator however I am not sure how to replace the regulator. I know that the regulator is on the back of the alternator and it should unscrew for removal. However the only thing I can find on the back of the alternator that unscrews does not have the brushes coming out of it. Where exactly is the regulator and how do I remove it?
Can anyone help me here? I hope this makes sense. If not I can try to take pictures to clarify what I am trying to say.

The regulator is in back of the alternator secured by 2 flat head screws. It doesn't really have brushes, but 2 metal (copper?) spring loaded contacts that wear with use. It'll say Bosch 12v, etc etc. On the 325 you will want to remove the AFM/box and boot for clearance.

Sounds good. I ordered the new spring loaded contacts today for it. I am assuming that the regulator is in the middle of the back of the alternator?

Is this a bosch or valeo alternator? The bosch is a pretty straightforward job, as Barry mentioned. The Valeo is a bit more of a pain in the ass.

Just a helpful hint - MAKE SURE IT WORKS!!!
I don't know where you are getting it from, but I've been fighting w/ Autozone for the last month over alternators that don't work right.

Have them check it (if possible) before you leave the store.

No, it won't be in the middle but around the edge (typically the top) of the alternator.

              Here are pictures.

What exactly is the thing with the wire leading out of it that is sitting on top of the alternator? It was bolted by one 8mm bolt to the middle of the alternator in the back. Also, where is the voltage regulator?
Ignore the coolant off to the side. I was fixing a leaking hose.

              Thanks

That's a Valeo alternator, to replace the regulator you'll have to take off the black plastic cover. It is easier to do that with the alternator out of the car. Sorry, but I'm short on time right now, I'll post later when I have a chance.

Thank you very much for the response. This makes alot more sense now. Anymore hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

That pic just gave me nightmares. Unfortunately you have a Valeo, it took me a while to realize that the Bentley does NOT mention that they are 2 types of alternators.

But most places that you can order parts from offer voltage regulators for the two different types, which should then clue you in to go check and see which one you have.
