I've never taken the alternator apart to know. But can you tighten the stud to see if that stops it from spinning? If it's a pressed fit, obviously that wouldn't help, but if it can bottom out you might be able to tighten it up enough that after soaking it in pb blaster the nut would break free without loosening the stud again.

looks like its a solid mounted stud so may need a new alt period

That sounds like it might be crazy enough to work. Also, it sounds like I *may* be able to try that before thursday. If I get the chance tomorrow, I'll give it a shot.

Sheeiiiioot...well, I found less expensive ones on Rock Auto at least. What's the risk of an alternator with 10 fewer amps, just wondering.

Wont properly run things. Is yours an 80 or 90 amp?

I'm not sure which one. I'd guess 90A just to be on the safe side.

You could try cutting a slot across the tip of the bolt and use a flat blade screwdriver to hold it while you undo the nut.

So cut a flat head into the end of the bolt, and use a normal wrench to undo it, right? That sounds like it could work

I think he means use a dremel cutting wheel to cut a slot in the end of the stud, then use a big flat blade screwdriver to hold it from spinning. Good idea.

I don't know that you have room to grind flats for a wrench there.

That's what I meant. Sorry for the vagueness in the reply. I just wonder about getting a screwdriver back there. I'll definitely give it a shot when I can though

DING, ding, ding E30-325iS is the winner. Yes, yes, yes use the dremel to cut a slot into the end of the stud. Then use the biggest screw driver possible for leverage then try to back the nut off. PB blast the shit out of it first.

Pull the alternator loose and turn it sideways while still in the car to get better access.

also dont quote real OEM for prices. also carful shopping at rock auto, they sometimes offer the cheapest shit available to them, i had a friend order a starter for his e36 and it came with all these chinese symbols in the case for 90-100$.

and for 120$ after the core was given back to me, i got a bosch unit
