New hazard switch different than old switch - tab prevents it from fitting

My blinkers work, but my hazards wouldn't turn on so I bought a new hazard switch.

The new E30 part number is 61 31 1 367 340 - The switch that came is marked 61 31 1 367 341, but from what I have read it is the same switch.

The new switch is taller than the old, but the bigger problem is there is a difference in a tab that is present on both the new and old switches. On the new switch the tab is taller and cut slightly different and prevents me from plugging in the new switch into the connector. Note all the pins line up as they should.

Is it the wrong switch or am I supposed to cut the tab off?

I would search for the part that fits, i.e. the same part number (unless you have solid confirmation from BMW that the new p/n definitely replaces the old p/n)

Found an old thread on s14net. Looks like the tab needs to be broken off. Apparently the parts catalogue states "The code pin must be removed for installation in vehicles built after 09/1986."

Look at the pins. It's definitely the same switch. You're not going to catch on fire.

Trim off the tab and plug it in. :)
