Engine cutting out at high RPMs, feels sluggish.

It's an 87 325i, i replaced the fuel filter and it seemed to run better, thought it was back to it's old self, later in the day i took it up again and it felt like it was "running out of steam" and it cuts out like a rev limiter around 6k. It was intermittant before, but now it's more regular. I tried a top speed run at a safe location (not a public road) and only reached around 125.

I'm thinking it's time to get a cap, rotor, wires, and plugs, but they're pricey for these cars, i'm looking at $200 for everything. I don't mind putting that into my car by any means, but if there's another reason to look at that's less, i'd like to look into it before i do that. No CEL.

On another note, is there a place other than AutoZone/Advance to look for maintaince parts?

There are a lot of places for the maintaince stuff like bma, bavauto and the euro depot.

I had a similar situation on my car. It turned out to be an AFM problem.

cuts out @ about 6k, goes to 125mph...dude, those are the limits on an m20b25, set by the ECU programming. if u want more out of the motor, you need to purchase an aftermarket chip for your ECU. they will typically give you redline @ 6.9K and top speed about 145...also, you will need to run 91+ octane at all times with a chip.

Uh, no my rev limiter until recently was a little over 6.5k, now it's cutting out before the redline, according to the owner's manual, the top speed is supposed to be 134. Occasionally it goes past that cutting out and hits the ECU's rev limit, but something isn't right.

stock B25 rev limit is 6250

top speed limiters are only on late model cars

and your problem really sounds like a bad AFM.

And it says what? This isn't the way my car was acting when i bought it, it pulled strong and hit rev limiter after 6.5k.
