Does it go up and down, over and over again? Sounds like it probably is your ICV. When mine died on my last E30, my idle bounced up and down from 500 to 1000, back and forth. I replaced it the next day, and it was fine.
Mine'll bounce from 300rpm to 1k+ and back, sometimes it'll just die. I've replaced within the past 10k miles FPR, ICV, fuel filter, coolant temp/level, and swapped AFM. I can hear the TPS click when i apply throttle. Sprayed carb cleaner everywhere checking for a vacuum leak, nothin. Any ideas? Sorry for the jack :)

yeah, that's exactly what it's doing. god help you if you cut on the a/c. jesus christ. bad ICV - how can you tell for sure? i just turned teh switch to "on" and felt it vibrate/hum. thanks!
ok..forgot i added a bottle of fuel injector cleaner last week and ran it a bit. now it seems like it idles fairly smoothly and not as high ~1000 rpm with small fluctuations-barely noticeable. if you cut on the a/c it jumps to 16-1700 - WTF?

it can get stuck too, and sometimes it will work intermittently. my IVC started dying last year, every once in a while the car would die immediately after starting. sometimes it would hum, othertimes it would be dead and I'd have to wack it a couple times to get it working again.
Just happened on my car... check the plug on the bottom of the injector harness. If that gets corroded, idle will go crazy.

don't seem to be any leaks....my fuel pump is buzzing pretty loudly too.
They say that's a sign the pumps on it's way out. But mine has done it since it was a week old )bought brand new). It sounds like a rc airplane.

You never said if it was an M20 but I assume it is since you said yours has an ICV. Easy way to check that the ICV is working is too unplug it. Same with the o2 sensor.
hey guys, I'm new here and I'm having the same problem.
My RPM needle will keep bouncing around from 500 to 1250 and so on.
I had this problem for a while now, but about 2 months ago I changed a couple fuses and the problem went away.
But for the past week, my car had been in the shop and they changed a number of things on my car. I got it back yesterday night and noticed my RPM needle began bouncing all over the place again =/
Any ideas from what might have caused this problem to surface again?
Any and all suggestions will be helpful!
Thanks in advance!
update: i've been driving the snot out of it these past few weeks in a quasi Ferrari tune-up style and the idle doesn't surge anymore, the idle speed is just high. bad TPS?
