For those of you with the 3.73 in your ETA, what is your top speed?
According to my speedo (don't know exactly how accurate that is), 124mph at 5450rpm (just shy of the 5mpg mark).
Bill, those numbers should be accurate provided you don't make the mistake of trying to turbo the car.

Pre-'89 Dinan chip. Newer chips have a few less revs, but the powerband and fuel economy is better. Stick with your JC chip and add double valve springs.

Turbo an eta? Why would anyone do that? It has been widely stated by the 18-19yr old e30 experts that it can't be done.

I took my car to a mechanic today and took him for cruise up and down the street and did a little bit of weaves and sharp turns so he could hear the noises and well he defintally doesnt think its the bearings and is pretty sure its the differential thats causing the noise.

So i guess i will be installing the 3.73. Guess i can say goodbye to first gear then huh. :?

I got on the highway today (which I rarely do), and with the 3.73 I was at 3k going 70mph! I think I messed up in my first response.

An eta with a 3.73 will turn the same speed at a specific rpm as an i with a 3.73. You just have less revs. The reason 1st gear will be relatively extinct is because you can't take it up to 6900 or whatever the i rev limit is. ie...an i with a 3.73 going 70mph @ 3000 rpms means an eta with a 3.73 going 70mph, will be turning 3000rpm also. Basically the same engine (m20), same tranny gearing, and same diff.

How fast would it make the car compared to say a 325is?

Im assuming the 2k dissadvantage is a big loss here.

It won't make it an 'faster', just allow for a quicker acceleration. Actually, the 3.73 may make the acceleration slower since you have to shift more often.
