    crap, what did i do? please help!

    so, I got some cleaner and cleaned up my AMF. I followed the directions on the can, gave the senser a dozen or so squirts, and put the intake assembly back together. Now, my car starts, but shuts off right away. This is bad, I need to drive to school tomorrow.

    Also, I took some water and lightly sprayed some of the dirt out of my engine bay while the intake assembly was out, and some got on the alternator, but not a lot. Would this have anything to do with it?

      need to let that maf cleaner dry completely. did you touch the sensor? could have killed it, they be delicate. Doing this tomorrow, so I hope I don't kill mine.

            Silly suggestion, but did you by chance unplug the AFM and forgot to reattach the plug. That can cause that problem.

            Dont ask me how I know . . . . :-)

              Water on the alternator...not unless there was a bad connection or something.
              If you ever clean the engine bay do it in small portions without a hose. A hose has tons of "overspray" and can wet things you don't want wet.

              What kind of cleaner did you use?

                I was going to say the same, but last I remembered, having the AFM unplugged didn't cause the engine to just die.

                ALSO, if you unplugged your battery while you were doing it, the ECU might have reset and is relearning

                  since you mentioned water in engine bay

                  check fuel pump relay and stuff too

                    I used CRC MAF cleaner, the stuff the Bavauto suggested in their tech newsletter that I got in the mail.

                    I didn't touch any of the vaccuum hoses and I know I remembered to re-plug in the afm.

                      The engine should start and run w/o the AFM. So to eliminate it as a possibility you can unplug it. My suspicion would be that you've dislodged a connector or have an intake leak. The bottom folds of the intake boot is a popular site for a leak that they can't see with the boot in the car.

                        Check all your sensor connections... Did you happen to disconnect the ICV when you went to clean the AFM?

                        BTW... any CELs being throw? Does the car start and idle. Can you be more specific?

                            Word, it won't run without the AFM, however, it will start and die with the ICV unplugged. If the car has a CEL, it should be thrown with the AFM unhooked anyway.

                            AFMs aren't that sensitive, open it up and see how your contacts are inside, bend them down a bit and try again.

                              With the ICV unplugged the idle should jump between 800-2000 rpm's every 2 seconds or so, not shut off.

                              I wouldn't recommend doing anything with the internals of the AFM. If it worked before you used the cleaner, nothing got bent out of place. Leave it dry, maybe let it get sunlight in there to help dry the chemical up. It's very possible you gunked it up with cleaner, or loosened the dirt up and it got stuck on the sensor. As a last ditch effort, try cleaning it again. If that fails, your car will never start or run without the AFM, so you better start looking for another one now if this is your only ride.
