sorry to bring up an old thread, but why would you need to drill the hole threw the plywood? Couldn't you just wack the damn piece of wood without the hole?

If you don't want the bushing to go all the way on, go ahead and do it without a hole.

So how does the hole help get the bushing on all the way?

lets the end of the control arm go through it, so the bushing can be pushed all the way, It wasnt obvious?

the hole is for the end of the controll arm, you can just use WD40 and sand the paint of and it will slide on with a lot of force and then put it on quick.

I have to do the ones on my wife's 325i pretty soon. Luckily, I have a friend who works in a machine shop, and he's going to press everything for me for free.

A quick tip if you're using the M3 bushings - use to soap / water to lube the bushing and start it on the control arm by hand - then just find a deep socket that is of a similar diameter of the inner metal ring of the bushing - two whacks with a hammer and you're done.
