differences between the m42 and m40

I need a new car pretty quick and for cheap. I want an e30 of course but I was wondering what is the difference between the m40 and m42 motor? Is there a substantial performance difference? I was jsut wondering cause I want a car thats going to be reliable and get me to Whiteface every weekend in the winter up here in ny. Cost is also an issue (aka cheaper is way better), hence my thoughts on purchasing a 318i instead

they didn't sell the M40 in the US, only the M42. I believe the M40 is SOHC, which would mean it's even weaker than the regular M42. the M42 is a great reliable motor, and since they don't sell the M40 here anyway, the choice is made for you. :)

You aren't going to find an M40 in the States. That's the single cam version of the m42, offered in 1990 & 91.

      Are you thinking the M10?

            It's still a 1.8.

                  Yea, the US 4 banger Z3's, and the 96+ 318 & Ti's. 95 Ti's got the m42.

                    Don't forget the E36 318is, it used the M44 from 96-on.

The M40 is an M20 with 2 cylinders chopped off.

                    edit: Charlie's got it.

yeah, stick with the '42 for sure. :0

M40s are lame. They are like a SOHC M42 with a timing belt that always breaks about 2/3 of the way thru the service interval. They are also notorious for eating up their cams/valvtrain in a hurry leaving you with no powerband above about 4.5k rpms
