I need a new car pretty quick and for cheap. I want an e30 of course but I was wondering what is the difference between the m40 and m42 motor? Is there a substantial performance difference? I was jsut wondering cause I want a car thats going to be reliable and get me to Whiteface every weekend in the winter up here in ny. Cost is also an issue (aka cheaper is way better), hence my thoughts on purchasing a 318i instead

M40s are lame. They are like a SOHC M42 with a timing belt that always breaks about 2/3 of the way thru the service interval. They are also notorious for eating up their cams/valvtrain in a hurry leaving you with no powerband above about 4.5k rpmsAdam Fogg- '88 M3
Common sense- It's the new 'gifted'
