    uuuhm, no. m40s are pretty much updated m10s, sort of. they are single cam 8 valvers.

      M10 and M40 are totally different design....
      Can't say that M40 is update M10 engine....

      However, M42 is based on the M40. there are a lot of common parts used in both engines.

              my bad, I was under the impression that the 318i 4 doors in 91 came with a slightly different motor than the 318is. If it didnt I might go this route

                  naw all late model US 318's use the same motor. a 4 door 318 might not be so bad, all the lightness of a 318is with the stiffness of a 4 door chassis :)

                      Have you not been paying attention? This whole disscution is about how the M40 is an 8v. The 16v here is the M42, with 143hp.
