    Hmm no rev limiter?

Yeah, so every once and a while when I push the shit out of my car i run into an interesting issue. First, my clutch slave and master cylinders need to be replaced, along with my whole shift assembly as i have 4+ inches of play in gear, but anyway... So i floor it, shift to second, am clearly in second but get the wonderful sound (and vibration) of my gears grinding (at this point my foots already back on the gas because I don't assume my clutch is THAT fucked. So i took a look at my RPM as my car was SCREAMING and i'm wayyyyyy the hell passed 7k, i'm shifting at 15 miles per gallon. Now the only other time its reved this high was when I did the same thing a while back and blew a shit load of carbon out of the exhaust, that time the rpm needly bounced fully around the gauge. Interesting. So my question in short: Why do I have no rev limiter?

    Thanks.

sounds more like your tach is off. My 88 325is used to do this randomly the tach would read 1k rpm's too high.

Yeah, I do believe my tach is off. I generally shift at 3.5k, it doesn't sound strained at all, and I idle at 1.1k...

It's possible that the above is true. It's also possible that your DME has an aftermarket chip in it. I know for sure that my 92 has a stock chip, and I have bounced off the rev limiter on one occasion -- at about 6300 rpms, maybe a tiny bit higher. Can't tell you for sure, since I wasn't paying attention to the tach at the time (which is the whole reason the event occurred lol!). I was paying attention to that damned chipped M42 vert in the next lane :o

Is there a top speed limiter in these cars? Laser read 137, friends audi read 138, my speedo said 150+.... (not right, speedo is weird.) The car was definitely screaming

Yes, it's like 125 mph. Can be removed with a chip.

              rev limiter

thats funny, cause my rev limiter only happens at 1st gear. I can rev past 6000 on any but the first. So wierd..

on later cars, yes, but not all E30s had them. and a chip doesn't remove it either..
