I know where some good s14 heads are and i have a spare m10 block lying around. I just wanted to know what was required to make it all work. I know the ports will have to be matched, but will i need anything like a special timining chain, crank sprocket, etc, etc?

I can't recall what all is involved, you may want to try s14.net for answers.

.
I dont think it would work as the s14 head is twin cam 16v, therefore it will be heaps wider and the water jackets/journals wouldnt line up. My M42 head is huge compared with my m10 head. plus spark plug position is different. Its not really worth all the messing around IMO, and i dont know how it will handle the different head characteristics.

Indeed.
no, I mean the M10 is a poor base to start with it
it's an engine developed in the mid 60's (almost technically oldtimer)
altough I've seen here M10b20's with double webers DCOE 45 and some several mods putting out 190hp
Just compare the costs to an M42 swap in an early body and some mods,
The M42 is also 16v and much less expensive as an M10 with S14 head and i think the same HP output
