Are you sure the battery light worked? If the bulb was shot it'll do stuff like that.

Bringing an ancient thread back from the dead sorry.

I have an 84 e that has a vdo cluster and the temp gauge is inop and the batteries are toast. Which I think is causing a battery drain. Anyway I bought a great shape motometer cluster since I'm doing an m50 swap. Well I obviously didnt do any research on the cluster swap. Can I use the motometer cluster or at least take the tach, batteries and temp guage of the motometer and put it on the vdo?

Ok so I guess since the one that's in my car is before 86 I can't interchange. Looks like I'll have to send it to Greg to rebuild it then. And sell this motometer one that I bought.

Resurrect for help. I'm very confused on this topic.i have an 84 318i, the battery light stopped working and is preventing my alt from charger the battery. (Swapped the bulb still no good). I've been told I need to get a late model like 91 cluster to put in because of a heat sink that prevented that from happening in later models. So as long as I get a 91 vdo cluster (currently have vdo) it will work and fix my problem.

From everything I've read you can swap anything among clusters as long as you don't cross the line between early and late (best determined by the number of red SI lights).

I do believe the bulb circuit fires up the alternator but the bulb alone is not the only potential culprit. Could be the circuit board, a bad wire or perhaps your SI batteries. Someone (Greg ?) will pipe in soon enough.

Yeah, I had my bulb go out and I replaced it but it won't come on now and I've gotta jump the car every couple days. It's getting frustrating. I've only taken it to a Midas for the work and they said the only way to get a new board was to have bmw build it for $1800

Seriously, used clusters are readily available or better yet, contact Greg at Bavarian Restoration (gregm on here) and he can hook you up.

Try working with the bulb a bit. Sometimes you have to bend the leads so they make contact with the fixture. I would try this first
