I have a m10 318i. my radiator was blown and the needle seldom left the lower part of the red!!

Don't think it meessed anything up, knock on wood, seems just as crapy as it was before the radiator went. By the way I have replaced it and now the hand never moves from vertical.

Go to Bavauto and get a lower temp thermostat. This should tame your concern.

I have a M10 also and the needle randomly (when in traffic with a temp over 30+C) goes over half.I suspect that there s a problem with it...but now i read the same from you all,i m not too sure...

On my way to (and from) Mexico I go through Az. I stay in Scottsdale and my gauge stayed a needles width above 1/2 as it always does.

mine is ALWAYS like one needle width left from the middle...it gets up there fast, then stays there...is this bad? my last e30 was the exact same, and both had the timing belt and water pump replaced recently...maybe it has something to do with elevation?

Right in the middle as it shoud. Its not always a good thing to have a car runing super cold.

The position of your temp needle depends on which thermostat you have in.

LikeCDoos, mine sits exactly where yours does.

My 92 325iC runs at 1/4 driving amd 1/2 at idle. I asked around and people tell me that its a bad fan clutch?

1/4 driving, and that's where you hear the thermostat open up if you listen.

Just sitting there, it might go ever so slightly over 1/2.

When the fan hit the bypass hose, however, and the coolant went all over, it very quickly went into the red. Pulled over in like 20 seconds steam was everywhere. Scary when those little 10 cent clips go. I have like 3 zipties around that hose now and blue tape to show if the fan touched the hose. Hasn't yet.

BMW temp gauges and needle position

Quick word about the temp gauge in most BMWs:

Typically the temp gauge will run up to straight up and down which is about 180 degrees F. The needle will sit there until the sensor reaches 210 to 213 degrees F, at which point it will begin to rise again. The information I have indicates that BMW does this deliberatly to keep owners from overreacting to a temp gauge that moves a lot, especially when in stop and go traffic.

There are other sensors/gauges available from VDO that are a direct replacement for the stock sensor and feed a true graduated gauge.
