    What is red liquid for?

The little accordian-like rubber cover that is circled in black in the above image, is ripped in half (but not very noticeabley.. didn't see it when i bought the car). It has a small bit of red liquid slowly accumulating on the bottom of it. (Not the front left though, its the front right one. )

what is this part, how crucial is it to get fixed, how hard is it to replace, and how much will the part run me?

You must please really read up more on autos. That is a boot that covers the steering rack. Your car has power steering and is leaking thru a seal. then it drips out a boot.

Mine does the same thing yet it leaks like a sive.

BMWs use automatic tranny fluid in the PS resiviors. if your boot is leaking fluid, you need a new rack, there isn't supposed to be fluid in the boots.

That pic is my old 88 325i, after I totalled it. We tipped it over on it's side to get the tranny and diff out. Much easier that way.

Not trying to bust your sack, just think you might want to pick up a haynes or Bentley manual and peruse thru it a little. I am always happy to help the younger guys in shop so they can learn or maybe teach me new trick. Then knowledge gets passed to next generation.
