i've found countless LSD's, 3.73's, 2.93's, 885 head, mint sport seat etc its always fun going to yards!

All of the pick-your-parts down here are picked clean by the fuckin monkeys that hound that place day in day out. It's constantly filled with tons of non-english speaking border jumpers trying to make a buck.

I'm bitter at the lack of cool finds I've had.

same up here. always no n english speaking people at em up here. and super early. i just chase em away with a prybar and take the good stuff.

i plan on going to one soon. is there one in the PNW, preferably in portland that is recommended? any eurocentric ones? what kinds of tools does one recommend i bring with?

if you're digging for metric cars then bring metric only.
Try to bring versatile tools.

Screwdriver with little bits for all the sizes of screw.
Large flathead screwdriver for "persuading"
3/8" drive ratchet, i also carry a 1/2" drive with a 3/8 adaptor for the really tough stuff.
with one 3" extension and
a set of metric sockets, I carry both deep and shallow sets
Hammer for "persuading", I found one in the junkyard and it's now my 'yard hammer
Large channellock pliers, regular slip joint pliers and small needle nose pliers
Vice grips
maybe a set of metric wrenches
Gloves,
penetrating oil
All carried in a shoulder bag that i can fill with parts

You don;t need all that and can taylor it for what you are looking for that day.
You can keep a lot of the stuff in the car so it's not so heavy as you scout. I've just been bringing it all with me as i hate stopping in the middle of something.

Tips:
Use floormats and carpets for setting down your bag and working under cars.
Be CAREFUL working under any car as they are sometimes precariously perched.
Don't break stuff to get to the stuff you want. You may find you needed it later
you'll certainly see great parts you want only to discover someone took a hammer ad chisel to it just to avoid using a screwdriver.
And bring water for the drive home

B&R auto wrecking has a few around the area that sometimes get older BMWs. Try the one out in Damascus.
