Every once in a while, when my car idles for too long, a few minutes at least, the engine compartment starts to make a funny noise. It's hard to describe, but it sounds like something is trying to spin but is being resisted, but it has no affect on the way the car drives. Either turning the car off for a few minutes or driving the car at higher revs for a few minutes gets rid of the noise. I'll try and come up with a better way to describe the noise, but does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Thanks

Have you checked the fans and belts in the engine bay? -
I believe it's actually play in the gearbox - I've read that the Getrag gearboxes have relatively loose tolerances so produce a bit of noise.Originally posted by BE30syour throwout bearing if i have that spelled right.
Mine does it as well. Replaced the clutch and throwout bearing etc. and the sound is still there.
