getrags can be noisy at idle with a lightweight flywheel. there isn't anything "broken", although supposedly replacing the input shaft bearings helps. If I'm not mistaken though, james replaced all of that stuff and his still rattles. That must have pissed him off. :p

Yep, new shift fork, input shaft bearing, new clutch, new TO bearing, new pressure plate, new slave cylinder, everything.

I give up, my fix is a Getrag 280

oh man. My old shop replaced the input bearing for James. My boss Pete and I finally found the correct puller tool and everything and it took us a little time to find it. We used a BMW bearing, not an AM OEM one. Once we were done Pete and I celebrated. Until James and I installed his tranny and the rattle was worse then before. I felt bad, Pete felt bad, James laughed it off but also felt bad I'm sure.

It's a mysterious rattle. Another example of its weirdness.
My original transmission for my red car has 212,xxx miles on it. I was just barely beginning to hear it rattle. Then during my build I damaged the shift rod. I upgraded to a lower mileage transmission with 103,xxx miles. Installed, started, drove, neutral, clutch out, RATTLERATTLERATTLE.
            ????

moral of the stories, nothing is broken. Just deal with it. :-)

I know this is an older post; I'm just happy that I found it...This rattle noise is driving me crazy and I was ready to tear my tyranny apart.

Sitting in neutral=rattle, rattle, rattle engage the clutch and the rattle gone?

supposedly it's actually the layshaft bearing and not the input shaft bearing. a ltw flywheel makes it worse. Mine has 255k on it and it rattles; it's not unbearable but I've gotten used to it over the last 30k. It would be nice to rebuild mine and make it smooth though..

1st motion (input shaft) bearings, Counter gear and countershaft berings. It's very typical.

I t's not really a good Idea to try to rebuild them though, The parts that wear: Countershaft, berings syncro rings and hubs cost more than an OE reman trans and to do it correctly you need a bunch of special tools including a jig and something like a 20 ton press.

Also a real light flywheel will make a bunh of noise even on a tight transmission.

Pretty much forever if the problem is input shaft rattle while in neutral. The noise is irritating, but not harmful.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks jlevie, this is good to know. Other than the rattle while in neutral the car works really well. Man! these cars have a lot of little bugs.

I probably sounded like doomsday didn't I (didn't mean to scare you).

Yes they will go on a very long time like this.

For those of you not using it, I HIGHLY recommend Redline MTL/MT-90 for the getrag. Major improvement in mine, as far as getrag rattle goes.
