rear wheel bearing noise or ? (pics)

Could this be the cause of what I thought was the rear wheel bearing?
Can the rubber boot be replace individually?

does it sound AWEFUL? mine does... I thought it was a bearing too but i'm told my axle is dead. (HedrexVooDoo's dad was the original owner of Hendrex's '84 and said he had had the same thing happen.)

two more weeks until i have my new e30 and my current one can be off the road to get some true loving.

good luck... i'll be following your thread for when i do mine soon

Might actually be easier and/or cheaper to swap in a good used shaft also ;)

Certainly less messy. I've never gotten so greasy as the last time I changed my cv boots.

so do ya'll think my output shaft joint is shot? I'm not sure how long I've been driving around like this. Maybe a few hundred miles? How much grease is supposed to be in the boot? is packed to the top?

Not completely packed, but a good amount. Once dirt gets in there, it's only a matter of time before the joint fails.

If you're stuck for cash, an inner boot like yours wouldn't be such a bad job. Luckily it's not an outer boot as you'd have to take off the inner boot to do that job.

Take off the cracked boot and clean out the joint really well to remove any dirt, etc. Replace boot. Regrease.

                Buy a used axle.

Or spend <$100 and get a completely rebuilt new axle and swap it in. Done.

Ummm...not sure. Just buy a cheap boot kit for the torn boot OR just drive it as is and hope for the best.
