Yeah, I was rockin the non-syn 20w-50 down here last winter for a time, until it go so damn solid (-20) that the car just couldnt crank fast enough to start (a fux0red battery didnt help the situation). I have Mobile Uno a mix of 10w-30 and 20w-50 in there now. :P

With 200+k on the motor, it isn't going to make a difference what brand oil you use.

Seeing as you were using 20w50 non-synth in a New york winter, your motor is probably already trash.

Its an E21 and my motor IS already trash. 223k on a non-rebuilt engine of shady maintnance before i bought it does not bode well for bearings/rings- and thus, oil pressure.. And... "Mystikal"... in case you havent heard, BMW engines are made to take heavy wt. oil (i.e 20w-50) and the M10 in no exception. Granted, I had changed the oil in the fall when the weather was still warm enough to run that wt. oil... and because of a med. cndt. was unable to drive the car again untill mid (abnormally cold) winter. Otherwise, the 20w-50 would have been outta there. And believe me, the undriveablility was due mostly the battery's lifeless condition, as when the car was jumped, it started as it always has and ran strong.

Im not ass enough to leave that thick oil in there for an extended amount of time, so after the first incident it was gone. Im only 70 miles north of the city, so weather as cold as last winter was quite rare.

It still is a very tough motor and I doubt after the long life its had, a few attempts to start it with thick oil will be its downfall... you all should be able to see the big picture better than that.... comon.

i have a rather noobish question about oil weights
which is thicker oils with a higher number or oils with a lower number
50 of course being high and say 30 being low

In the most basic sense (not getting into dual wt. oils).... oils with higher wts. are thicker. 5w30 is thin, 20w50 (which im getting railed on for using) is fairly thick for engine oil, 80w90 or thereabouts is gear oil for tranny or rear end say-quite viscous...
