Rediculous clunking coming from the rear end

I just actually picked this car up as a daily, knowing about this issue.

The owner didn't know what it was. It's not coming from the tranny and it's making a very obvious thud sound. Doesn't happen when coasting in neutral and there is a delay in power delivery.

So I'm guessing that the driveshaft is the only thing holding the diff in the car OR the center driveshaft bracket is broken.

Any guesses? I'm jacking it up in the AM.

This is an 85 325e.

Problem Solved. It had an invisible guibo installed...I can't believe it drove!!!!

eh, does it happen rapidly when your accelerating? if so its the center bearing. if it only happens once, or when you go over bumps, its prob the diff mount... i think thats more of an e36 problem tho right?

Mine did this when I bought it. The PO thought it was the rear subframe bushings. It turned out to be an exhaust bracket! Go back and shake the exhaust and see if that produces the noise that you are hearing.

+1 for center support. If you replace the CSB do the guibo at the same time, it's probably begun to crack from the angry shaking.

Or just extreme wear and tear.... These are 20+ year old cars... But damn are they fly! Bmw should do a reissue/update.

If you drive for thousands of miles with it flopping around down there.

I'd go ahead and replace the driveshaft, csb and guibo along with the dif mount. That shaft must be wasted.

The driveshaft isn't just going to fall out, but the flange bolts will bind on eachother and transfer power to the wheels.

This is by far the WORST guibo problem I have EVER seen. And I used to replace 2 per year on my M3 =P

I hope the trans pilot is OK, though the needle bearing in the shaft is likely wasted.

haha mine was the exact same way when i bought my car. towed it home at about 10 mph... BAM-BAM-BAM-BAM
