it put out 13.9 volts, what should it be and can that be fixed without replacing the alternator?

It's putting out 13.9V then the alternator is charging fine. Was the test run under load? Big stero? what other electrical load was running at time?

The only load I ever produce is the headlights and doom lights, I do not even have the factoy 2 watt stereo hooked up.

They had it hooked up and at idle it made 45-50 amps and at liek 3000 rpms it made aroudn 86 amps

When I turned the headlights on i did not look at anything exceot the amps, which dropped about 10 amps, I figured it was normal since the lights were pulling about that much.

BTW they hook to the battery, and since the alternator is connected directly to it they had it right.

well mine is a 140amp alternator. so next question is how many amps does yours say? It's right on the data plate. What alternator did you use? them Bosch M50 unit or your old M20 bosch and changed the pulley?

the m50 one, I will run and look,

so the m20 alternator will work on there?

It would need to be trial fitted plus you would need the pulley's swapped. But it has the same mounting hole degrees if I remember correctly.

mine says "80" in relatively large digits, so i guess it is an 80 amp.

would the batt go dead if you were pulling 2.6 amps all night?

Why is your battery being drawn on over night? Has it been going dead over night? Did you have them check the levels in the battery or see if you had a dead cell. My wife's passat loves to eat DieHards till we put a battery blanket around it. It helped keep it cool so it would stop cooking of the fluids.

remeber you can only put distilled water in a battery or you are killing it early with the minerals in it.
