I installed the harness and mirrors from a 535. They are hot all the time when the ignition is in the on position and get to 110 to 130 degrees when working properly. There is a positive and a negative on the mirror, if you hook them up backwards they will not work. I would have to dig up a spar mirror to tell if it is the top or bottom that is negative. Great addition in FL since the mirrors fog up immediately when it starts raining when it was 90 degrees 2 minutes earlier.
once you connect the harness, you are set. they are hot in "on" and are always on while running. As for how long it takes, it's fast enough and i live where there IS snow.
I found this thread very informative. Another question I have is how durable the mirrors are since they're heated all the time?
Well, durable enough so that I bought used wide-angle heated mirrors, daily drive my car, and have had no problems. I'm not sure how to "test" for durability really.
Yeah I was just wondering. If the mirrors are heated all the time to about 100 degrees how it affects the surrounding plastic and glass. Btw I picked my heated mirrors off a 5 series in a junkyard for cheap. So that's another source to check
my car has heated mirrors from factory, and they are hot any time the car is on.... i didnt even realize i had them until i pulled the mirrors off to find 2 prongs on the back on each, unfortuatly, one was broken off of the pass side one...
you can pull the heated mirrors off of an e28...all of them had the heated mirrors. I am assuming you can pull the harness as well. When I replaced my mirrors, I specifically got the pronged ones for this exact reason. I'll see if I can pull the harness and get some pictures on monday.
*edit* I am going to try for the heated door locks also

As an FYI for future search's on the subject of heated mirrors and heated door locks
per factory manual
The outside mirror can be adjusted and heated after turning ignition on
heating is controlled automatically
Heating is switched "on" by an integrated temperature switch when the mirror glass is below +15 plus/minus 5deg C (59 plus/minus 9deg F).
Heating is switched "off" automatically when a temperature of 50 plus/minus 10deg C (122 plus/minus 18deg F)
Heating switches in again when temperature drops below +15 plus/minus 5deg C
the melting speed at -10deg C (+14deg F ) for a frozen mirror is about 5min with power consumption of approx 1.5A
small black wires are tied into main 4 pin mirror plug as seen above to the Blue (hot IGN on) and Brown ground wires so if you want to upgrade splice in as seen if your harness doesnt have wires already
as far a door lock heaters (lock heater control unit)
again per factory manual:
when drivers door handle switch is closed(handle pulled up)
the heater switch closes for:
31 sec @5deg F (15deg C)
17 sec @32deg F (0deg C)
5.5 sec @77deg F (25deg C)
