Coolant temp gauge issue after changing the water pump

The water pump (WP) on my car was leaking so I had a local, trusted shop replace it.

Prior to the WP replacement the coolant temp gauge (CTG) functioned normally. Immediately after the WP replacement the CTG needle moves between the .25 and .5 marks frequently and quickly. I would use the term erratically, but that would indicate a loose ground wire, which is not the case here (I am familiar with what the CTG does when the ground is loose and this isn't it).

The shop said that an air bubble may cause the CTG to behave like this and that the system should purge the air after a few miles of driving. So, I turned on the heater and drove the car about twenty miles.

The issue persists. However, now the CTG is stable at low RPMs but starts moving between the .25 and .5 marks at high RPMs.

Could this indeed be a loose ground wire? I realize that coincidences are possible and that the loose ground manifested itself immediately after the WP replacement, but...

    Any ideas?

No biggie? This is keeping me awake at night ;)

      Any suggestions?

Since I don't drive the car much at all (I know, I know) the shop went with the Laso.

Did they change the coolant? Give it more time and report back.

Barry, I put in Water Wetter / distilled water less than a year ago - they topped up the system with WW / distilled water.

I had the same issue after getting a head gasket replaced. After a day or two it went back to working perfectly normal.
