No, you knock the axle in from the opposite end of the diff side right behind the hub. Need a small block of wood and becareful not to damage the cv boot.

Sorry, dense, using this pic as reference, which side are you saying to tap on, top or bottom?...

Bottom with heavy hammer and wood. Axle must be straight.

Yes, tap around the perimeter...it should go in without trouble. Keep the shaft straight though, don't let it hang.

Not sure there's ever been a more prefect setup for that line

Welcome! Looks like you've made lots of progress so far! The price you picked it up for seemed about right. I'd love to get another one in the future.

As far the oil, I put 25w-60 in mine. I ran thinner oil before, but ever since i got the top end rebuilt by Robert @ e30motowerks in Huntington Beach, he recommended to go with Torco oil.

Keep the updates coming! She's looking great so far

Hub went back in tonight after I successfully test fit the halfshaft out of the car using a wood piece and light taps from my hammer. Hub feels a bit loose but I imagine that will tighten up when the halfshaft is installed.

The car is back on the ground! The wood piece and mallet worked well. The roaring noise is gone! There's still some whining coming from the back, but it's nowhere near as loud. Changing the other wheel bearing and diff fluid should help.

Next topic. When I removed my rear deck shelf I found this cracking. Anyone know what this is?

EDIT: Its sound deadening - same stuff behind the dash and under the carpet

That's sound deadening it looks like. That looks like the same stuff under the carpet.
My m3 doesn't have any under the shelf though.

Just got a quote to do a full repaint/dent removal on the car (stripped down to a shell) for $5k if I bring it in as a rolling shell. Anyone have an idea of if this is reasonable?

It looks like the front right fender and the front of the hood have already been painted so all original paint isn't in the picture.

If I did repaint, would you think its better to stay factory color or do something individual like a blue (from a value perspective)?

From a value perspective, definitely keep it the original color.

Is this shop reputable? Are they stripping everything down to the metal? Will they spend the time to wet sand the paint to get it perfect?

5k isnt unheard of for a respray, but when you are dropping that kinda money, you want to make sure its done right. Aka all glass removed, everything masked properly, etc

Yeh its a good shop - Classic Collision in Buckhead (Atlanta). Saw an old MB SEL they had just fully resprayed (stripped down). Looked very good. Going to check some other shops in the area and compare
