my urethane CAB just slid rite on the CA without any force or lube...are my CAB just filthy slutbags?
right, the bushing should slide right on the control arm. Its getting the bushing inside the lollipop that requires the soapy water and mucho force to slide in.
There is no way in hell you can press a bushing into the lollipop w/o using a hydraulic press. You need about 6 tons of force.
Only the rubber bushings require lube, the urethane ones should just slide on.
1. unbolt CAB lollipops (16 or 17mm bolts, 2 on each lollipop)
2. press off CAB lollipops with CAB's
3. press out old bushings
4. press in new bushings
5. reinstall CAB lollipops with new CAB's using sylglide or something similar
your going to want a shop to do all the pressing for you, doing it in a vice can be sketchy and you probably dont have the right tools do actually do it right in a vise. good luck.
Jackass. First you post an ignorant "take it to a shop" post, then you go and actually answer the question. Maybe you should have posted that in the first place Danny. :) Use your powers for good instead of evil....
As for the CAB's, you should absolutely get them pressed. Too much of a chance of putting them in incorrectly and/or damaging them in the process. It doesn't cost much - any reputable shop can do it for you, and it doesn't take long.
Whenever I see a post of yours... your selling something.
he's just helping someone out!!
WTF?
his post added infinitely more to this thread than yours did. Mine as well, but I believe that Alex deserves a defense

I've done it twice.. my dad did it once....
Your brackets must be wasted then, because your bushings need to be held in a little tighter than something you can push in with some soapy water.
is he talking about pushing them onto the control arm or pressing the bushings into the brackets without a press? if the latter, I call BS. I destroyed a $40 puller after getting one bushing halfway into the bracket. then I took it to a shop and they took 15 minutes to press both sides in and only charged me $20.
I've also tried the freezing method (heat up the bracket, freeze the bushing). it doesn't work, because the bracket isn't actually round. it's slightly oval, when you press in the bushing it deforms the bracket which holds it in tight. putting it in a vice works no better..
to make it easy I bought a set of used brackets for $35. that way I can have a set with new bushings ready to go and just hammer them onto the control arms before I put them in the car.
From what I understand, it's POSSIBLE to just unbolt the lolipop and slide off the end of the control arm from the bushing. Then, get the old bushing out and the new bushing in (however method you want to use) and then slide it back onto the control arm with some dishwashing liquid and let it sit for ~24 hours to let the dishwashing liquid dry up before you drive, or else you can possibly have it slip out or something. It might be just the luck of the draw as to if you are able to just pull off the bushing from the control arm, without having to take off the actual control arm itself. I plan on doing my M3 offset CAB's this coming week, and I'm just going to take off the lolipops and HOPE that I don't have to remove the control arms (although it doesn't sound terribly difficult) and if I do, I'll do it.
Someone please correct me if any of this is wrong.
you can easily do it without removing the control arms. remove your wheels to take weight off the suspension, get a torch and heat up the old bushings, when they are soft enough you can pull them off with your hands. however, getting the bushings back on the control arms without removing them is much more difficult than if they are out of the car.
well my old bushings are complete trash ie, 1/2 of the square rubber chunks are missing out of both. and i have another set of lollipops so i think i'm going to end of freezing the spare set with the bushing in place and using some white lithium grease on the control arm and sliding them on, hopefully all that should prevent me from having to remove the control arm.
