My brake lining light is comming on

I dont know if its because the fronts are bad or if its the rear brakes. The car has 225k. Since i dont know how well the car was taken care off in the past should i just replace verything? or just fix the part thats bad? How can i tell wich brakes are making the light come on?

take the bulb out of the cluster, do pads and rotors, maintain your car on your own schedule.

The sensor is closed for on, so if you go around and disconnect the front and rears in turn and check for the idiot light, it will let you know which ones are bad. Or better yet just look into the calipers from the top and determine which ones are running out of pad.

It's not like they are going to pull over and change the brake pads right when the light comes on.

Ignore the light and check the brakes every time you change you oil. I ASSUME you change your own oil, and if you don't, you should. There are many things that should also be checked about every oil change like brakes, brake fluid levels, transmission fluid levels, check for loose/broken/bent parts, etc... Doing basic maintenance on your car is the best thing you can do for it. If you just let some guy at a shop do it, you don't know what condition your car is actually in.
