    Caliper to bracket problem!

    OK this is it. This is the only thing holding me up from putting the wheels back on and seeing how it looks! I have the one side totally done, but I'm having some problems with the second.

    When i took the caliper off when i started this project I stupidly separated the bracket from the caliper (unlike the other side). Anyway I put the bracket back on. I then proceeded to put the brake pads on, tabs facing the front of the car. While holding the two pads I went took the caliper and went to slide it on. It doesn’t fit. Its not even close to fitting on properly!!

    At one angle, if I'm tilting the caliper up I can get two corners to barley get on the brake pads. It will involve slamming the caliper with a rubber mallet to get the caliper to fit over. The one problem is, I’m concerned with what it seems to be the piston or some type of ring around the piston. This metal ring is deffinely whats causing everything and I'm pretty sure it wans't this far out when I took it apart!. l'm not sure if it’s ok to chip the edges of this ring. I'd rather find out what the heck is causing all of this before I do anything stuiped. I would love to get this done tonight and see the end result.

    you need to compress the brake piston on the caliper before you put them on with new pads..

      I have the same pads as before thought.
      Not sure if I have my manual with me. How would i go about compressing the piston?

        it might have moved when you took them apart. put it on the ground, grab a large screwdriver, and push as hard as you can. I can do it with my fingers most of the time :P

              oh snap. I expecting what you said to work right away haha.
              Well first you can't put the caliper on the ground since its hooked up! But I tried pushing it in with a screwdiver and all but nothing budged. I read that you need a C clamp. Is this correct? Just put the clamp inside the piston and tighten till it compresses.

              To bad all my clamps are missing right now grrr

              edit: I missed your post dave. C clamp it is.. just have to find one

                  the best way to do it is to put a really big socket inside the cylinder then use a big c-clamp and SLOWLY compress it dont do it too fast because it will push brake fluid out of the resevoir....

                    E30's look so good lowerd as I already knew from pictures but damn in person... holly shit!!

                    Well as you can see I got everything done and the car is on the ground. It sits soo damn low. I need to jack it back up tomorrow to fix one of the springs, which didnt sit right in the strut tower. I have to use my factory jack before the floor jack now, damn its low. This was so worth the time and effort.

                      just for future refrence, a lage set of channel locks and an old brake pad will do the job too.

                        Haha, you will get over it. H&R Sports aren't low. I thought my car was low when I got M3 springs... now I am pretty much tucking tire in the front and I'm so used to it I wish I could go lower.

                          you are replacing your suspension and you dont know how to compress a brake caliper piston? pretty sure brakes and oil changes are the most common DIY's....

                              ya, I havn't had to compress my pistons and i've had them off a couple of times... I knew the basic concept but didnt want to fuck anything up...

                              hey about the licance man, January 5th..
                              That dosn't mean i cant go to a damn parking lot and have fun with some cones before then :-)
