Big brake kit - upgrade with bigger engine?

    Hi,

I currently own a 1991 E30 318i with ATE front and rear calipers with the larger front 260 x 22mm vented from disc rotors.

I will be upgrading the engine soon (300kg!) and was thinking about doing the brakes while I was at it to the Massive 4 piston Wilwood caliper on the larger 280mm disc rotor.

I have no intention in doing any track work with this car but just a bit unsure on how the standard brakes will perform with the extra weight up the front. I am not fussed about filling in wheel gaps either as I will be running either a 15 or 16' wheel.

I am more inclined to rebuild the standard calipers, upgrade to braided lines, better pads and a pair of DBA slotted rotors up the front (already bought rear ones).

    What would you suggest?

What are you putting in there that's 300kg more than the M42? A turbo diesel?

The stock brakes are pretty actually pretty good. I can understand if you're putting in a V8 or V10, definitely. But the stock brakes stop an M30 swapped car just fine.

Depending on what you're putting in (Which we don't know), I would be inclined to say the stock calipers, braided lines, pads, and slotted rotors would be more than enough.

Judging by his user name he probably meant KW. 20b?
Just a guess. He is from AU
Get bigger brakes. I have a 400hp Sr20det in my E30 and the stock stuff even with good pads can be spooky.
Size the calipers pistons and master cylinder accordingly though.

No, I meant weight of the engine, 300kg ~ 660lbs. Never mention 300kg MORE...

E30RedtopSR, was your e30 running the smaller thickness rotors? IIRC one set is 11mm and is solid while the other is 22mm thick and vented.

          Holy hell.

Get the 300x32 kits front and rear radial mount kits and don't look back.

I can run 30 minute sessions without fade on these.

Doesnt matter sir. A triple rotor is a triple rotor.. you will need a means to stop safely on the street.

Hehe there is a guy down here in SA who has a 13b and that shit is insane. this will be godly.

I would just get in contact with Massive he know his shit and will point you in the right direction. Though I remember seeing a comment once where Lee said anything over 400hp and you should be looking into 330mm disc but don't quote me on that.

standard front brakes on a cosmo were only a single piston front caliper on a 272mm rotor with a car that weighs 1500kgs... so I am more leaning towards his 280mm 4 piston combo.

You can drive a car with your feet if you want to, doesn't mean its a good idea.

Maybe its just me but I like stopping and knowing I can stop. For the sake the extra $400 versus the money pit a 20B swap will be, I'd not even think twice about it.

Yeh that is what I would have guessed as well. Are you going to bump the power up on the stock 20b? If you do what power do you expect to see?

yes i know where you're coming from but with the bigger brakes then i will have to change the wheels. i didn't want to go above a 15' rim and I know the biggest of the brake kits wont fit under the wheel. not something that I really wanted to do to be honest.

Massimo, just standard for a while. the motor has low compression but still runs okay. will require a rebuild in the not to distant future (minimum 2k). I just wanted to get it in the car asap so I can get a mod plate before they change the rules in Queensland to follow the new ones that NSW have.

Funny that it's legal to have a 20b turbo in this car in Queensland but illegal in NSW under the new rules...

Yeh the rules are rediculas and out of hand. I don't know where to go with my car, if I want to do what I like then it will have to become a track car, but I still want to be able to drive her on the road.

                            It sucks allot.
