I was driving to work the other day and then I felt the rear end drop and heard some scraping from the back. I was probably doing about 30-35 mph and pulled over immediately. I'm pretty sure that the guy who did my annual state safety inspection didn't tighten the lug nuts. :curse:
One of the lug nuts sheared off, but I was able to get it out and one of the threads is stripped, so I'll have to rethread it. The rotor is pretty torn up on the edges and will have to be replaced. I think the edges of the rotor are grinding on the pads.
When the car dropped, the backing plate folded under the rotor. I was able to pry the backing plate out of the way, but now there is 1/2 inch wide by 2.5 inch long whole in the backing plate.
Am I correct in assuming that I have to remove the wheel bearings to replace the backing plate?
If so, this seems like a bigger job than I want to tackle right now considering the wheel bearings are ok. Can I just leave the whole alone? Will it cause any issues? Is there a way that I can cover this while?
Thanks.
