Help. Rear wheel fell off while driving.

I was driving to work the other day and then I felt the rear end drop and heard some scraping from the back. I was probably doing about 30-35 mph and pulled over immediately. I'm pretty sure that the guy who did my annual state safety inspection didn't tighten the lug nuts. :curse:

One of the lug nuts sheared off, but I was able to get it out and one of the threads is stripped, so I'll have to rethread it. The rotor is pretty torn up on the edges and will have to be replaced. I think the edges of the rotor are grinding on the pads.

When the car dropped, the backing plate folded under the rotor. I was able to pry the backing plate out of the way, but now there is 1/2 inch wide by 2.5 inch long whole in the backing plate.

Am I correct in assuming that I have to remove the wheel bearings to replace the backing plate?

If so, this seems like a bigger job than I want to tackle right now considering the wheel bearings are ok. Can I just leave the whole alone? Will it cause any issues? Is there a way that I can cover this while?

    Thanks.

Hey, welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear this. As long as the parking rake works ok and the hole is not near any of the parking brake mounting points on the backing plate, you will be fine.

      Good luck.

Hell, I cut off part of my backing plate so that the only part of it that is left is where the parking brake is and where the brake line runs.

What?!? How about make sure someone else doesn't actually DIE from the work that this guy has completed. Imagine if he was doing 65MPH and lost a wheel...on a freeway.

If you start messing with the car, you're messing with evidence.

How about having the inspector pay for the damage he caused, plus something for your hassle?

You can't be the first, they likely have a contingency fund for such crap.

Sorry to hear of this...never trust anyone to work on your shit without supervision...anyone not willing to let you watch is hiding something.
