top nut on the front strut assembly

What are some good methods on geting this nut to loosen without spinning the strut. Is there a special socket bit that bmw sells? thanks

NO! dont vice grip the strut to stop the spinning, thats absolutely wrong in every possible way! impact gun, impact gun, impact gun, or just a lot of torque on a wrench somehow. you'll get it

Vice grips are fine as long as you are not re-using that strut.

The strut would bottom out well before the spot on the shaft (where the vice grips are placed) enters in the housing. For example, when removing the RSM;s, the top part of the shaft can be held with grips and you can use and open ended wrech.

There would be no damage done the the shaft.
