e36 M3 springs on an IX

I read that someone on here is running e36 M3 springs on an IX. Does this work well? What shocks would be good to run with them?

    thanks,
    -tom

i don't have an iX, but for curiosity's sake i snaked a set of aftermarket springs intended for e36m3 off of ebay. i'll compare them to the loose e30m3 springs i have and post my findings.

I'm not sure E36 springs would match up well to the ix drivetrain. they might be too stiff in the front (understeer!). but I suppose they might fit.

as far as shocks, Bilstien HD at the minimum, Konis prefferably. there is no Bilstien Sport for the ix, and the only other option are Boges (and those won't do!).

well, for fitment, i don't know yet, but i'll post when i do.

as far as spring rate, if you wanna go with aftermarket stuff, there are solutions out there that probably won't cause understeer. the springs i ordered are f168/r436

E36 springs do not fit E30 struts.

            Quik325iX says otherwise here:

but we'll see later this week when they show up. if they don't fit, i got them cheap through a dutch auction, so i can pawn them off on some DTM/BF member and probably only lose $20 or so.

Have you ever worked on an E36? Or seen E36 springs?

no, and my intent is not to argue with you.

however, if you look up upper and lower spring pads on realoem.com, you'll find that the numbers match for pads for e30 325i and e36m3, front and rear.

i think that gives me pretty good odds. if you have information that says otherwise, i'm listening.

like i said, i have a set of e30m3 springs that i never bothered to install, so it's not like it's going to cost me anything past purchase price to compare the two. and if it doesn't work out, oh well, back to the fleabay they go. it's worth the ~$20 it'll cost me to satisfy my own curiosity.

tein s-tech for e36m3 arrived last night.

front on the aftermarket springs i got is a bit shorter, but they're supposed to have a bit of rake to them.

other than that, the contact surfaces are the same diameter, front and rear, top and bottom.

if the aftermarket springs i got weren't considerably thicker, and green, i could have gotten them confused with the e30m3 stuff.

no idea, i only have the e30m3 springs to compare to, sorry.

sounds like the dude who said he had stock e36m3 springs on his iX wasn't blowing smoke, though.

well, here's the thing.. they might fit, but I'm not sure they would be a good setup. they might also be far too short (hope you don't mind replacing CV boots often).

hopefully Quik-325iX posts some thoughts of his- as i'm an iS owner, front CV's aren't one of my worries.

Quik325ix said they lower it about 1.5"..which is less than the B&G springs made for the IX.
