take a pickel fork to wedge between the rod and strut. that might work but you will chance tearing the boot. you could also cold chisel the nut off, you might damage the threads a bit, but re taping might fix it. cut the neck of the stud and be done with. Replace the tie rod.

put a jack under the tie rod to put some pressure on the tapered neck of the stud. then hit it with a air gun. GL

I've tried most of what you posted^^ Except for the cold chisel and cutting the stud

Put a floor jack under the bottom of the tie rod and use that to put pressure on the bottom. It should hold the ball joint in place so you can spin the nut.

EDIT: damn someone beat me to it

I tried cutting a notch in the threaded part for a screw driver. I stripped it though. Looks like I have to cut the tie rod and replace it. Ugh!

If the bolt is spinning i the ball joint, sounds like you need a new tie rod end anyways, no?

split the nut with a dremel tool with cutoff wheel.

no, they are supposed to spin in place. that's what gives them their ability to move.

an impact would have taken it off in 2 seconds.

Jack the ball joint up like everyone else said.

I ran into this on a few e30s... if the car is on jack stands, simply take the edge of the crown on your jack (I'm talking a real floorjack, as in fast-rise, low profile) and put it on the center of the balljoint, jack it up until the car is slightly lifted off of it's jack stand (jack stand remaining in place for safety) then turn the nut SLOWLY and DELIBERATELY.

One turn, half turn other direction.

This usually happens when some of the threads are collapsed, I had to shorten some of the tie-rod and control arm bolts because the ends were completely mangled.

                      Good luck.

i will add that a properly sized piece of scrap lumber between the jack and the ball joint is most helpful. A good whack with a hammer to the top of the stud will release it from the hub. I have a ball joint tool though

Thread the nuts on 3-4 turns and hit it as hard as you can with a small sledge. You won't damage the threads and you're supposed to replace the nuts anyway. If that doesn't work, get a stronger neighbor or a bigger hammer.

Dude, using an impact gun this would have NEVER happened, in fact using one now could save you.

Oh yeah, bolt spinning... as mentioned put a floor jack under the joint to push it back into the hub to keep it from spinning. don't need an impact gun.
